Credit card debt elimination is the dream of many Americans, getting rid of the debt that has plagued them for so long can bring an incredible feeling of freedom. In today’s society it’s very easy to get in over your head since it’s virtually impossible to pay cash for everything you need. That’s where credit cards come in. But if something happens, you might not be able to pay off the bill when it comes in and it can quickly spiral out of control.

Anything can contribute to this, as accidents do happen. You might simply forget about the payment, or you may have been injured and had to pay medical bills, or maybe even something as simple as not getting the payment in on time. None of these are reasons for you to be condemned to a life of debt.

There are a lot of options for getting out of debt: debt consolidation, debt counseling, even bankruptcy. However before you do anything as drastic and permanent as bankruptcy take a step back and think about it. You should try to solve this issue on your own first, as bankruptcy must be an absolute last resort.

As the saying goes, “if you want something done right, do it yourself”. This can also be applied to getting out of debt.

Here are three easy steps you should follow to help get out of debt. It’s not going to be quick, and it will take patience and discipline, but it is a proven system that will help you be debt free.

1) First you should make a detailed list of all your debt. Have everything included, even the smallest debts. The list should show all your monthly costs as well. From utility and house payments, to insurance payments. Anything that’s taking money from the household should be added. All of that should be in one column, while all of your credit card debt is in the other. That way your expenses and debt are side by side.

2) Give yourself a very strict monthly budget. Make sure you are able to pay the minimum payments on all of your debt.

3) Use that list and choose the smallest debt first. Pay as much as you can spare towards that single debt. Soon it will be paid off and you can take the money from that debt and apply it to your next smallest debt. Keep doing this over and over, working up the list. If you keep doing it you’ll eventually find yourself getting out of debt.

Credit card debt elimination is a hard thing to do, but it can be done. Just make sure to always have hope, and keep going. As long as you stick to the system above you will find yourself free of debt.

This method is proven to work for many people, it just takes a lot of patience and discipline. You will probably have to make some sacrifices as well such as cutting back on your daily lattes and eating out as often. But that will be a small price to pay to finally get out of debt.

There are many credit card debt services available, most of which are designed to help you cope with your credit card debts and get them back under your control. Depending on your level of debt, you should check what kind of credit card debt services you require before you sign on for any program.

You should also be aware of the services you’ll be getting and how much you can expect to be charged for those services. Be sure that you’re applying for the right credit card debt services for your individual situation.

Credit Counseling Services

Financial credit counseling is perhaps the simplest form of credit card debt services. Certified counselors are trained to take a look at your financial situation and then help you to find ways to adjust your current budget. They’ll also work with you as you learn how to take control of your financial obligations in a responsible manner.

In many cases, credit counseling could be the perfect solution for many people, because you’re not just learning how to reduce your debt properly and effectively, but you’re also learning valuable financial literacy that can help you avoid getting into the same financial mess again in the future.

Debt Consolidation Services

Many debt consolidation companies offer credit card debt services in the form of consolidation loans. Their aim is to refinance your current credit card balances and roll them into a consolidation loan that is often charged at lower interest rates. Your old repayments stop and you only have one easy repayment to think about each month that is often much lower than your old payments.

While it appears that all your credit cards have been paid out and your payments have been reduced, it’s important to look at your overall level of debt. Many people who apply for debt consolidation loans through credit card debt services find that they owe more than they did after the loan is established.

This is usually because some of your old creditors may have added penalty interest or overdue fees to your balances, but it may also be because the company you’re working with may have also added their fees to your debt balance. While you might feel as though you’re paying less each month, you may have actually increased the amount you owe. Always check how the company you’re working with will be paid.

Debt Negotiation Services

Credit card debt services exist for those clients who haven’t made any payments on their credit cards for several months. If this sounds like you, then you might consider applying for a debt negotiation program.

Companies offering debt negotiation, or debt settlement, work with you to negotiate with your creditors on your behalf in an attempt to get the lender to settle for a smaller amount of money as payment in full for your outstanding credit card debt balances. This works best on unsecured debts like credit cards and you should be able to show the company that you haven’t made repayments for at least a couple of months.

In many cases, credit card debt services using negotiation as a tool to reduce your debt can often get your creditors to agree to accept 40-50% of the original debt amount. This can be a significant debt reduction for many people.

There are many companies that provide credit card debt assistamce. This means two things to me. The first is that there are many people in need of credit card debt assistance. They have gotten themselves into trouble with credit card debt. The second thing is that many of these people need assistance to get out of credit card debt, because they have not been able to do it on their own. We will cover some things that you can still try before you seek professional assistance.

Settling credit card debt without assistance.

The first thing to remember is that credit card debt assistance does not come without a cost. If you get help you will pay. And the money that you pay is money that could have gone towards reducing the amount of your credit card debt. So unless they really do something that you could not have done, they are pushing you further into debt. There is enough information on this site alone to help you get started.

Some important facts about do it yourself credit card debt repair.

There will be some time involved. You must compile all of the documents, review the depth of the problem, formulate a solution, talk and negotiate with creditors, and then followup on the process.

You must figure out all of the unknowns and things that could go wrong. Be prepared for emergencies.

You will have to establish goals that are realistic and achievable.

You have to be able to keep very detailed records of phone calls and transactions. You must not miss out on any promised commitments.

Why are credit card debt assistance companies so successful?

A lot of people can not, or will not go to the trouble of negotiating and talking with creditors. They do not have the knowledge to do what the pros do. If they would just take the time to do the research, they could probably do it themselves. These companies are counting on this.

If you can not do it yourself and have decided to get credit card debt assistance, make sure that you do your research before you choose a company. There are many companies that are more interested in making a profit than helping you. Get references and do checks for complaints. Make sure that you know exactly what you will be paying and exactly what you will be getting for your money.

It is easy to get into financial trouble, but very hard for some people to recover. You are going to have to do some work either way you choose. This is one time you should put in the maximum effort.

Credit card laws are the laws that govern the way the credit card companies must operate. You don’t usually hear much about them. That’s because most of them are just basic laws—the type that keep anyone from doing illegal things. But credit card laws are under review and changing as we speak.

Consumers and lawmakers are trying to put credit card laws into affect that will stop the credit card companies from changing their terms at will. You might not realize it, but your credit card rate of interest can be adjusted at any time. You don’t ever have to be late on a payment.

How can they do this? Isn’t there a law preventing it? No, there isn’t. And that’s one of the problems.

If you owe money to Joe and Bob, and you’ve always paid Joe on time but you’re late with Bob’s payment this month, should Joe charge you more? Of course not. And if Joe and Bob were your friends, Joe raising your payment or your interest over a late payment to someone else would probably cause some problems.

But that’s exactly what credit card companies are doing. You can be the best credit card user in the world. You’ve never even made a late payment, and you often pay more than the minimum payment. Make a late mortgage payment or a late payment on another card, though, and see what happens.

Some of the credit card companies stopped this practice after consumers complained. Others hold to it. They can raise your rates and slash your credit line based on that late payment to someone else, calling you a credit risk. In fact, if they review your credit report they can decide to do both those things just based on how much credit you have and how much you’re using.

Credit card laws don’t stop them from raising your rate if they only think you look like you might get into debt trouble eventually. Which is basically a free pass that lets them raise rates and slash credit lines anytime they want. That’s not fair.

They also regularly deal underhandedly with consumers by charging variable rates on the way you use the credit cards. That in itself isn’t dirty dealings. But they way they handle your payments in regard to those rates are.

Say you’re getting a low rate on that balance transfer. Many cards will do that but you’re paying high interest on purchases. You know that, so you’re not bothered. When you make your payment though, where do you think they apply that payment? They lower the amount that you’re already not being charged interest on.

The amount of money sitting there charging you 18% interest doesn’t change. They automatically apply all payments to the amounts with the lowest interest rates to keep you in debt longer and paying more interest.

Many people have no idea that their payments are applied that way. Credit card laws being considered today will also remove the company’s rights to rewrite their contracts with you anytime they want.

You’ve gotten behind, and you’re wondering, can you be sued for credit card debts? It’s important for you to know that you can be sued and you will be sued. You may be able to let the debt go for a while, even for a few years. But ask anyone who’s been there, can you be sued for credit card debts, and they’ll give you an unhappy yes.

Credit card companies will get their money from you, one way or another. You can let a debt sit idle, slowly accumulating for years and you may think they’ve forgotten or let it go. Believe me, they haven’t.

If you’ve missed just one payment you know how serious they are about getting their money. Miss one payment and they’ll call to remind you, even if you’d paid on time for years. They’ll tack on a late fee, probably around $35.

And depending on your card agreement, you may see your interest rate start to move up like a balloon full of helium. Some credit cards, especially those with low rates and introductory offers, send your rate soaring after one late payment. You don’t even have to miss it entirely, just pay it a day late!

These measures continue until they turn the debt over to a collection agency. The collection agency’s sole purpose it to get you to pay them. They’ll initially send you a letter that they want you to reply to in about 30 days.

Usually the letter will state that if you don’t agree that the debt is yours you need to dispute that with them within 30 days. Otherwise they’ll assume they’re correct. They want either that contact of dispute, or a payment.

If you ignore this, they’ll send more letters and start calling you. Ad if the debt goes on at length, you’ll probably get to deal with several such companies. Many collection agencies handle a debt for a while and if it doesn’t work the debt is sent somewhere else.

After a certain amount of time passes, the credit card company can either write the debt off or opt to sue you for the amount. So, can you be sued for credit card debts? A resounding yes. They can and will sue you unless the amount is too small to mess with.

How small is too small? People have been sued for hundreds of dollars or as little as a thousand. And by the time the court costs and legal fees are added in, the debt will be at least a few hundred dollars more.

When you entered into the credit card agreement, you signed a contract stating that you would follow the terms of the agreement. Not paying them on time broke that agreement. If you work with the company, they will try to make arrangements with you to help you pay your debt.

Stop paying, though, and you’ll eventually get an answer for, can you be sued for credit card debts? In the form of a court summons.

Some tips on credit card consolidation are common sense. One tip that should go without saying is to not make a new agreement that you can’t pay. It does no good to consolidate your credit cards for a lower monthly payment if that payment is still too high. Here are some other important tips on credit card consolidation to help you make your decisions.

TIP 1: Make sure the debt consolidation company or credit counseling company you’re working with is reputable. These companies are a dime a dozen all over the Internet. You can also find dozens of different such companies advertised on the television and radio.

Just because you see the ad at a popular and reputable website, or see the ad on the television, doesn’t mean the company is a good one! Even rip-off companies need to advertise to draw in customers. Try to talk to someone who has used the company. Investigate them online and with the Better Business Bureau.

TIP 2: If you’re using credit counseling or a debt consolidation company, really look at the terms of the agreement. This is one of the tips on credit card consolidation that can’t be stressed enough. Do the math yourself.

Even if the company is a good one, you shouldn’t just take what they’re saying as gospel. Crunch the numbers and figure out just how much you’re saving. Sometimes what you find can be surprising.

You may be about to sign an agreement that eases your burden today, but increases it tomorrow! If you’re getting a lower monthly payment, make sure that your interest rate is lower also. Otherwise your debt will accumulate at the same rate as before while you’re paying less.

This might seem like an acceptable solution if your payments are out of control. But it will keep you in debt longer and making payments longer. If you’re having trouble with your debt now, think about how you’ll be adding to it in the future. How likely is it that making bigger payments in the future to pay off more debt won’t be a problem?

Most good companies avoid this situation, but you should always make sure you’re not getting in deeper just in care.

TIP 3: This is one of the tips on credit card consolidation for the do-it-yourselfer. You didn’t contact a service but instead decided to consolidate your cards yourself. Read the new card agreement carefully. If you think you might be forced to make a late payment even once, reconsider.

Doing so can send your interest rate skyrocketing and you could end up in deeper debt than before.

TIP 4: Once you’ve consolidated your credit cards, stop using the ones that have a zero balance. Use cash only and do your very best not to add any new credit debt. If you don’t do this, you’ll end up with the consolidation to pay plus new debts on other cards.
Stop using credit cards is one of the best tips on credit card consolidation you can get.

About Credit Card Debt Relief Solutions

With more and more people struggling with credit card debt problems there are relief programs available. They can help make credit card debt more manageable.
These programs were created to help. Do not be too proud to get help if you need it. It may be just the solution that you need.

Debt Consolidation

If you have more than a couple of loans with high interest rates debt consolidation may give you some relief. They actually pay off your debts and you pay them one monthly payment. Chances are good that they will be able to reduce the amount of interest that you are paying each month and apply more of your money to the principle. But as with anything else, make sure you know the costs and fine print before you agree to anything.

Other Debt Relief Solutions

For more options in providing relief from credit card debt, you can opt for debt settlement. This option offers reduced “payback ratio”, which eventually means you could be paying as low as 40 cents for a dollar you owe.

Credit card balance transfer is another possible solution. This method enables you to acquire a low interest credit card. Then, you simply transfer your high interest credit card balances. Your credit rating may have to be good to use this strategy. And again, make sure that you know about all of the fees and terms before you transfer any balances.

If your total financial situation is a mess, you may want to consider credit counseling. These companies are trained to get the best help available for you. They will help you with your credit card debt as well as any other debt that you may have. They can get that financial relief and breathing room that you need. They will look at all of your income and debt to devise a solution to get you back on track. The price that you pay them will probably be worth the end result.

Benefits of Credit Card Debt Relief Solution Programs

The obvious advantage is that you will be on a road to financial relief. But what else will you gain?

You will learn how to manage your finances better.

You may learn some strategies that you would probably never been exposed to.

You may be getting a chance to start your financial life fresh with a whole new plan and outlook.

So while financial problems may seem bad, and they very well could be, they are also a chance to learn something. A chance to grow. A chance to change your future. Don’t waste the opportunity.

Credit Card Debt Solution: First steps

Since you are here you have probably decided that you have a credit card debt problem. You are also looking for a solution. Your credit is more important today than it has ever been before. It is something that should not be taken lightly. Your credit rating and history affect more things in your life than you can imagine. So let’s take a look at what you should start doing right away.

Stop Spending

Do not spend money that you do not have. If you don’t have the discipline, do not carry a credit card or cash. You can’t spend what you don’t have. Lose that mind set that tells you that a coffee from Starbucks will not hurt your credit situation. If you multiply it by the number of times that you do it in a year, you will see how much it is costing you.

Create a Budget Plan

Nothing will happen in any area of your life without a plan. You need to know how much you make and how much you can spend. You must have a plan for a solution that will allow you to eliminate your credit card debt while still paying your necessary bills. You must get your priorities in order. Only the government can spend more than it takes in. You are not the government!

Use Cash Instead of Credit Card

Spending money on a credit card is too easy and not much like spending real money. Since most people don’t see the bill until the end of the month they do not realize how fast it adds up. If you have cash and you watch it disappear as you spend it, it is real.

Improve Your Credit Card Rate

You need to know exactly how much of your payments are going towards the principle of your credit card debt. Part of your solution must include paying less interest and more towards the principle. Your credit history and rating will determine how much help you can get. If it is bad, you will probably not qualify for a lower interest rate credit card.
The very first place to start is with your credit card provider. Get on the phone and talk with someone who is authorized to make decisions. You may be surprised at their willingness to help.
If you can not get a lower rate, and your rate is too high, you may have to look in a different direction. Perhaps your local bank can give you a loan at a lower rate. Maybe you could get a secured loan against your home.

Credit Card Debt Solution: Final words

Credit card debt can ruin your financial future. There are several solutions of eliminating your credit card debt in this article. None will help if you eliminate the debt and then just get back into debt. Some fixes will only work one time. I have seen people take out a second mortgage on their homes to repay credit card debt. And then they take the same credit cards and max them out again. This makes the situation even worse than it was when it started. Make sure that you have learned that lesson and took away the temptation to get back into debt.

There is no mistaking that the economy is slowing and money is getting tighter. Many people are looking for ways to lower their monthly expenses. And of course one way of helping with this is with a low interest credit card balance transfer. This can help several different situations. We will discuss how they can help you and what to be on the look out for.

Let’s check out the types of offers that you will see and what to look for in the fine print.

Teaser rates.

As the name implies these rates tease you to get you on board. Make sure that you know how long these low interest credit card rates last and what the rates will be after your balance transfer is complete. If you are doing a balance transfer to catch up or to try to pay a credit card off, make sure that you can make it happen before the rates change. You will see zero and low interest rates that last from around 3 months up to a year.

Your credit rating will probably have to be good to take advantage of these low interest credit card balance transfers. And if you are late with a payment, there may be a very stiff penalty. You can go from zero percent to 30 percent in a hurry with some of these promotional offers.

New-purchase promos

If you transfer your balance to a low interest credit card, some companies will give you an interest free or very low rate on new purchases. Interest free for a year is not that uncommon. This may be good if you need to make a major purchase, and you want to pay it off before the interest rates kick in.

If you make the decision to transfer your balance to a low interest rate credit card make sure that you know all of the terms and conditions and that you read the fine print. Here are some things that you need to be aware of:

Transfer or transaction fees.

I have seen fees in the 3 to 5 percent range. And it is normally added to your balance as soon as you make the transfer.

Time to transfer balances.

It could take up to 4 weeks to make the transfer. Do not miss any payments on your existing credit card balance. And when the balance does transfer to the lower interst rate credit card, you have a decision to make. Will you keep your old credit card? If there is any chance that it will get you into trouble you may want to consider cancelling it. But will the new credit card be a good card after the initial low interest rate is over?

Do you qualify for the lowest advertised interest rate?

A lot of low interest rate balance transfer offers do not apply to everyone. They may just be for people with a good credit rating, and you may qualify for an offer that is not quite as attractive. They may offer a zero transfer rate and then when they see your history and rating they may only offer you a 10.99 percent offer. Not quite as nice, is it?

What next?

OK, lets assume that you checked the fine print, compared all of the offers and found the best low interest credit card balance transfer offer. What should you do next?

Do not waste the opportunity. Your monthly bills should be a lot lower. Make the extra money work for you. The best plan, depending upon your situation, would be to pay the credit card off. Zero debt is the best debt.

Credit cards should be used for online purchases, to keep you from carrying too much cash, and for emergencies. If you do not have control, you should not carry credit cards. They have ruined a lot of financial lives in the wrong hands. If you are just starting to see a problem, and you go the low interest credit card balance transfer route, take advantage of the situation to get yourself out of trouble, and to stay out of trouble!
