What is Credit Card Debt Counseling?

Interest rates on most debts incurred by debtors become increasingly high to the point that an individual’s monthly payment isn’t even enough to cover just the interest. Individual resort to many different credit card debt relief programs and credit card debt counseling is just one of your many possible choices. But, why should you opt for debt counseling?

This method enlists the help of professional debt counselor. Their role is to do the negotiating with your credit card company with regards to possibly reducing your current credit balance. Some might even suggest you get into a debt consolidation program once they have assessed that it would help alleviate your financial condition while eliminating credit card debt.

You will typically start off with basic money management and they would help you come up with a sound budget plan. Hence, the idea here is to not only help an individual get out of debt but to improve their financial management ability to ensure that they put an end to the debt cycle.

When To Opt for Debt Counseling?

The choices of debt relief programs are quite extensive. Hence, deciding on whether debt counseling might offer the best and most efficient debt relief method is difficult. Every credit company has their own counselors that are responsible for handling the budgeting, consumer credit, and debt management aspects. Therefore, having a reliable debt counselor will also provide the financial organization you need.

If you are still unsure, ask your credit card debt counseling agency the following questions to assess whether this credit repair service is for you:

• How much will the service cost you?

• How much is the percentage of payments or if there are any hidden fees?

• What range of services do you offer? Does it meet my debt relief needs?

Once you have determined that a particular debt counseling agency provides services specific to your needs and still allow you to save some money after paying the program’s services, then it should not be a bad option for debt relief.

Benefits of Debt Counselor

• Your debt counselor can help reduce your monthly interest rate on an existing debt.

• The acquisition of better budgeting plan and improved financial or debt management will help ensure you pay your bills on time.

• Research on the specific agency’s reputation. Were previous clients satisfied with their service? Was it able to deliver the promise of debt relief?

• Make sure the specific agency you are looking into has its own insurance.

• Your debt counseling agency should be one willing to work with all credit companies. Beware of those who are willing to work only for specific companies since they could have some secret arrangement wherein both companies can profit.

• Paying methods to your creditors. Take time to learn about what percentage goes to the agency so you can finish paying your debts within your desired time frame.

Feeling overwhelmed by debt? You may just need the services of consumer credit counselors. They can help with credit card debt as well as any other debts that may be affecting your credit report and your credit rating. And they are available to you no matter where in the world you are located.

Of course the most prominent is the Consumer Credit Counseling Service. They have locations all over the United States and 13 other countries. They are easily found in your Yellow Pages or right online. Just use your favorite search engine to find the office nearest to you. They have a proven track record of helping people get out of credit card debt and back on their feet.

And there are other companies with consumer credit counselors available. And again you can find them in the Yellow Pages or on the internet. Just beware that there are a lot of scam artists out there, so choose wisely. Check with the Better Business Bureau, and do a search for complaints.

Before you sign anything make sure that you have reviewed every document. Make sure that you know exactly what you are getting and exactly how much you will be paying. Also check for some kind of guarantee.

Reputable consumer credit counselors should advise you of your legal rights as a consumer as well as your rights as their customer. They should review with you all of the services that you will be getting and it should be spelled out in plain language that you can understand. Also make sure that you can get out of the agreement if you are not satisfied, without any penalties.

The fee that you pay for their services could just save you money. The consumer credit counselors will call your creditors and sometimes may be able to negotiate better interest rates. They may be able to get a lower payment, or consolidate some debt to save interest. They will probably have better luck at talking with your creditors than you would.

Consumer credit counselors can be a fantastic option for people who have debt problems that are getting out of control. They can put you back on the path to a brighter financial future. But as with anything, you must be a wise consumer. Do your homework before you make any decisions that may just make your situation worse.

Free debt counseling would be great if you could find it!

Are you feeling the stress? At the end of your rope? It may be time for some debt counseling. But I doubt if you will find it for free. Before you go this route, make sure that you already tried to fix the problem yourself!

Just keep this one thought. There are a lot of vultures out there. And they only have one goal in mind. To get as much of your money as possible. They could even end up making your situation worse! So with that in mind lets look at what you could gain, what it will cost, and what you should be on the lookout for.

First, they will basically do what you should have done. They will make some phone calls and try to get some help from your creditors. They may be able to get reduced rates, or eliminate interest totally, lower monthly payments, relief from debt collectors, and a one stop payment plan for you.

The cost varies, but you need to know up front what all of the fees are. They vary a lot, but you may have to pay an initial interview fee, application fee, and then a monthly fee. And it is easy to hide fees, so beware.

Check them out before you talk with them. Check with the Better Business Bureau, The Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies (AICCCA), and the National Foundation For Credit Counseling.

If they don’t want to spend a lot of time with you, run for the hills. That is a sure sign that they are out to get your money. Make sure that that have an easy to read contract with all of the terms and fees listed. Make sure that you understand them all.

I don’t want to completely scare you. I just want you to be cautious. You are going to have to find out how much they can save you, how fast they can get you out of debt, and is it worth the cost.

And lastly, don’t be fooled by words. You may see the word “free” thrown around, but try to see the big picture. Something may be free, but not everything. Another favorite is “nonprofit”. Sounds tempting, but it doesn’t really mean anything to you.

So if you end up considering debt counseling just remember that as with anything else, it is “Buyer Beware”.
