Helping you make sense of your money

Best Rewards Credit Cards.

If you are one of the smart people who pays your credit card balance off each month, you should definitely be taking advantage of rewards credit cards! If you do not, stay away from these cards. You will eat your rewards up in interest fees. Look for a low interest card.

Why do I like rewards credit cards?

Because everything I buy is on sale! At the very least I get 1% back on everything I buy. I also pay my monthly bills with a credit card. I use it for my cable, phone, cell phone, electric, and internet hosting bills to name a few. And most are automatically deducted each month. So I get 1% back, don’t have to write a check, use a stamp, or spend extra time on them. I don’t have to balance the checkbook as often and my bills are organized on an easy to read statement each month. It doesn’t get much better than this, or does it?

So what should you look for? Well you should not have to pay an annual fee. Some will charge an annual fee, claiming that you get more rewards. READ the fine print.

Watch out for “introductory rates”. They may not be as good when the intial period is up.

Know the limit. Most cards have maximum amount that you can earn per month or year. You may need more than one card if you use it a lot.

Know how the rewards are paid. For instance I have a card with my auto insurance company that pays towards my auto insurance. But it saves me finance charges and it gives me a rebate! Some give you cash, and others give you points towards purchases. I like flexibility. My favorite card has many options. I can take the cash, shop online, or get gift cards. Sometimes this is a great way to increase your rewards even more. For instance I decided to get a Red Lobster Gift Card. I got a $45 card for $40. OK, that was nice. But then a week later they sent me a $10 gift card to the Red Lobster. No minimum purchase required. I now had $55 for $40. It sure made that dinner taste better! They said that they just do that sometimes. They sure convinced me to use that card more!

Some cards are only good for rewards on certain purchases.
